At the risk of being over-simplistic, what if the US adopted a new income tax plan? Everyone pays a flat 10% - whether you earn $100 bucks or $100 million. No deductions, no IRS. Could that work?
The "Flat Tax" was debated a lot in the 90's when Neil Boortz championed it. It could work if low income families were exempted, since $4,000 on a gross of $40K is more significant to a working people family than even $200K is on a $2M gross, but there goes the idea of everyone paying the same percentage. Additionally, excise taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes, etc. eat into a family budget, but aren't really felt by higher income folks.
I'd love to see a hybrid flat tax that throws all loop holes out the window, but the tax attorneys and CPAs benefit from overly complicated tax laws, and they have juice.
Well, we wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. When the hell do they get to the promised land?
