I am familiar with your area, I was stationed at North island Naval Air Station for about a year and a half in the early 1970s. My roommates and I spent many after-duty hours on the beach between the southwest gate of the NAS and the Hotel del Coronado. and even were able to rent a house just a few blocks from the beach by pooling our BAQ and "comrats." It was fun. We would often have picnics and cookouts on the beach and the fact that us E-4 & E-5 bachelor sailors often brought a case or two of cold beer with us from the commissary, we were quite popular.
